Shanghai Expo 2010

The United Kingdom released the final design details of its futuristic expo pavilion framework late last month.

The Seed Cathedral is a centerpiece of the UK Pavilion. The 20-meter-high cube-like framework will be pierced by 60,000 slim, transparent acrylic rods, extending outward and quivering using the breeze.

During the morning each rod will draw on the sunshine to light up the internal while at night, lights inside each rod will illuminate the structure.

Visitors in the direction of cathedral will uncover each of the rods contains seeds, symbolizing the UK’s contribution in the direction of expo concept of “Better City, better Life.”

Thomas Heatherwick, the pavilion designer, arrived in Shanghai yesterday, unveiled the design and talked about his inspiration.

“The Seed Cathedral captures everything that represents UK innovation, creativity, state-of-the-art technology, partnerships — and nature,” Heatherwick said.

The seeds come from all covering the world, with a huge amount of types from China, and also have been collected by the UK Millennium Seed lender Project, dependent on Heatherwick.

“Seeds using the rods are similar to dinosaurs trapped in amber,” he said. “We can protect the future of mankind along using the environment by harnessing the power of character through seeds.”

The area throughout the cathedral is designed to appear to be wrapping paper, signifying a present of friendship to China.

“The UK at expo is all about showcasing the strength of the UK-China partnership,” stated UK Deputy Commissioner common Carma Elliot. “It’s important to carry on our collaboration on vital world-wide matters this sort of as biodiversity and climate change.”
